Imani Boss, Franklin Cudjoe Reacts To 2019 Budget Statement

Franklin Cudjoe, Founding President of policy think-tank, Imani Center For Policy And Education has reacted to the 2019 Budget Statement and Economic Statement read by Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta on the floor of parliamentary this morning.

The minister highlighted some key achievements of the Nana-Addo led administration from the previous budget.

He also presented what government has been up to and what it intends to do in education, roads sector, agriculture, inflation and other general economic growth and development.

However, President of Imani, Mr Franklin Cudjoe appears not satisfied with what the Finance Minister presented.

In a Facebook post shared after the budget presentation, Mr Cudjoe highlighted some areas he believes were left unanswered.

According to him, areas such the One-District-One-Factory, One-Village-One-Dam and other policies and programs were not accounted for.

Find below Franklin Cudjoe’s reaction;

Updated: The Finance Minister is tired. Not easy to undo wrongs of the past NDC administration. But he should be more worried about the non-prioritization of some of his government’s many wishes and promises. We were told for instance by our leader that he’d was going to build 350 structures to accommodate free SHS champions in 18 months from January 2017, but we have no updates. We also have no proper and coherent updates on the 216 factories and village dams promised.

Similalrly, the Unspecial Development Ministry says it built toilets, boreholes and warehouses for almost a GHS 1BN in a year- We have no value audits on these claims. It is also wasteful to spend many many millions of cedis on referendum to create unnecessary additional regions. Why are we late and playing slow with the national ID project? What are the homeless in Ghana going to do to generate digital addresses in order to register for IDs? Why are people borrowing digital addresses to register for IDs? And why on God’s earth are we paying $1.5m per month for the next 10 years to the Ministry of Communications and its acolytes to perfom unclear and needless monitoring tasks?

So, I ask, if it were the President and the Finance Minister’s personal funds, would they apply them to these initiatives in the manner they are being foisted on us? Ghana Beyond Aid must be serious business.

By the way, it is good to tell your own story as the government through the Finance Minister is doing. But it is important to be reminded that inspite of all the stories, fuel prices, telecom charges, tomato prices, pure water and Nido prices have all appreciated.

A Daily Graphic story recently noted that recent food prices show that yams are almost 7 Cedis each, now, in urban areas, during main harvest. Yet the grower (Daboya, Krachi) is currently receiving 70 pesewas each tuber. The price per tuber by lake to Akosombo is 10 pesewas per tuber. As the Volta Lake Transport Company (VLTC) is broken, tubers are being transported by road – hence the 7x price multiple between field and housewife. Yet if VLTC was working farmers could get 2x and food prices reduced = food security improved and cost of living reduced simply by refurbishing gov’t asset of VLTC. The government should focus on reviving lake transport which is cheaper instead of spending time and resources on sky trains.

I will still give this government one last chance in 2019 hoping it will refocus its energies into productive enterprises.– Franklin Cudjoe

Menzgold managers trying to flee Ghana; some got deported – Staff alleged

Staff of Menzgold Ghana Limited claim some of their management have tried to flee the country as clients agitate for their locked up funds.

They added that 13 of the management members, the names of whom they listed in their statement, tried to leave but were deported.

“We confirm the travel plans of management members outside the country. Some tried and have been deported,” the staff said in a statement.
The staff of Menzgold also accused management of conniving with some persons within the government to secretly pay off selected clients of the company.

“We confirm that Management members are secretly paying off clients without a proper schedule and with assurances to other clients. This makes their act suspicious, and unfair whenever money is made available.”

“Powers in governance are aiding persons to retrieve funds but these same powers are reluctant in seeking the best solution for all,” the staff added.

The staff, who say they have been working for four months also claimed that”management has started selling off assets for personal gains and also to settle their close friends.”

The staff believe the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) must now probe the matter.

“Management members have fraudulently acquired properties such as luxury houses, schools, flashy and luxury cars and many more, to dwindle the finances of the company. We therefore wish that EOCO investigates them.”

Menzgold’s troubles began when it was asked to suspend its gold trading operations with the public by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Menzgold had been dealing in the purchase and deposit of gold collectables from the public and issuing contracts with guaranteed returns with clients, without a valid license.

This, the SEC said was in contravention of section 109 of Act 929 with consequences under section 2016 (I) of the same Act.

Aggrieved Customers have been protesting the company’s failure to settle them.

Menzgold’s rates were said to be as high as 10 per cent per month and 120 per cent per annum.

The demonstrators submitted petitions to the company, Parliament, the Securities and Exchange Commission and other authorities.
